Eden kicked a stone along the path, walking morosely beside what had been a heavily guarded Divide just the day before. Now there were just a few armed soldiers, sat around under trees, playing cards or rolling dice. Eden led Charm, a well-mannered mare, through the trees. He looked through the gateway when it flickered and faded beside him.
He patted Charm on her nose, talking to her about nothing and everything. In a life where every word needed to be thought about before he allowed it to fall from his lips, talking to his horses was one way to have an honest conversation, even if the beasts couldn't reply to him. Sometimes it was a relief not to be permanently advised or agreed with. To have an honest ear to speak into, knowing there would be no judgement, no censure.
He sighed, kicking his stone, thinking about Cole's words. He had been right—of course he had been right. It wouldn't have hurt, had he been wrong.
"I meant what I said," Eden said to Charm, looking at the large brown eye at his side. "When I told Jai I'd forgiven him, I meant it. But it's not like I expected to have to see him again, you know? Well, likely you don't have a clue, but I never thought I'd have to face Jai again. To have to confront what happened, I guess."
"You know, Eden, forgiveness has to be worked at."
Eden blinked, looking at Charm, wondering if he'd gone entirely mad. There was a quiet laugh, and Odelia stepped out from behind the trees to glide smoothly in his direction.
"If you think horses are replying to your words, old friend, then maybe it's time for you to take some time for yourself and reflect on your mental health."
Eden laughed, brushing his hair back from his face to tuck behind his ears. He slung an arm around Odelia's shoulders, kissing the side of her full mouth. "Were you spying on me?"
"Maybe so and maybe no," she said, tucking her hand into his back pocket. "Forgiveness? You speak of Jaizel?"
"I do, yeah. Not sure what I'm feeling right now. I told him I forgave him, before he died. I knew he weren't gonna make it out alive—I'd seen him die. I knew he was going to die, so I told him he had my forgiveness—we all did, you know? So he could die in peace, even if he couldn't live in peace. At the time, I meant it. But then, well." Eden looked at the leaves of the tree, lush and green on a branch above his head. "I thought he'd stay dead. Weren't expecting to have to see his face again, and have all the memories flooding back the way they have. It was a lifetime ago, Odelia, and yet it happened yesterday. Of all my lives, of all my hurts, and all my trials? What Jaizel did to me came the closest to destroying me entirely."
"Aye, I know it," Odelia said, leaning her head on his shoulder as they strolled alongside the weak Divide.
